Constitution has all aspects of democratic values: Nepalese Dy

The new Constitution of Nepal incorporates “all aspects” of universal democratic values and norms, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa said today against the backdrop of discontent among the Madhesi community over it.
Thapa, who holds the Foreign portfolio as well, said the landlocked Himalayan country has entered a new phase of economic development after promulgation of the Constitution.
He also underlined the importance of democracy whose absence, he said, fuels rebellion.
Thapa, who had accompanied Nepal Prime Minister K P Oli during a visit to India last month, identified democracy, free market and culture as the “three pillars” of peace.
“Very recently after 10 years of violent insurgency and another 10 years of chaotic transition the Constituent Assembly of Nepal has granted and promulgated a new Constitution. We have now entered into a new phase of economic development and prosperity.
“The new constitution incorporates all aspects of universal democratic values and norms. We are totally committed to a liberal economy based on free market,” he said addressing the Global Leadership forum, organised by the Art of Living Foundation, here.
Speaking on the occasion, Pakistan’s former Minister
Sherry Rehman said her country was fighting one of the “largest inland wars” against terrorism and doing it “alone”.
Rehman also highlighted the refugee crisis, including in Pakistan, saying that such inequality will incubate fear, conflict and add to the vector of economic and social conflagration.
Rehman was speaking in place of former Pakistani Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani, who could not make it to the event.
“Inequality going to be a huge divider and an instigator for conflicts…This is not the global leadership that is making the right decisions. This is not the world that is working,” she said.
Apart from Thapa and Rehman, the other speakers who spoke on the topic ‘Creating a Peaceful World of Tomorrow’ include former Bhutanese Prime Minister Jigme Yoser Thinley and former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin.
Without taking names, Thinley denounced the exchanges of military threat among nuclear-powered nations which, he said, amounted to “insanity”. Focus on “wrong goals” is propelling the society in the direction of a “catastrophe”, he said.

Indians have to move away from the mindset of minority or majority to ensure an inclusive society, union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal said on Sunday.
“I believe that the idea of inclusive society is to move away with the mindset of majority or minority. Each one of us is in a majority at one place and a minority at other,” he said at a Global Leadership Forum held by the Art of Living Foundation here.
The minister said the focus on minority issues had affected overall development of the country.
“It’s not about religious or political minority. In fact, the focus on political and religious minorities has caused more damage to society. It has created a debil psychology… and caused distress and distrust across the world, which we need to change and improve by focusing on people and sections of society which are underprivileged.”
Goyal said religion was a very personal issue and had nothing to do with society.

Saying leaders must focus on inequality and move away from the majority-minority politics, Union Minister Piyush Goyal Sunday said that such politics had caused a lot of harm to the world.
Speaking at a panel discussion during the Art of Living event, Goyal, MoS Coal (Independent charge), spelt out the challenges before leaders and said, “An inclusive society should move out of the old mindset of majority and minority. Each one of us is a majority in one place, each one of us is a minority in another place.”
Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu and MoS External Affairs General (Retd) V K Singh were among the union ministers present at the panel discussion. About inclusive development in a globalised world, he said leaders must address “inequalities”, which should not be viewed from a “religious or political” prism.

Need to live in harmony: Prabhu
New Delhi, March 13: The need of the hour is to live in harmony, without hurting each other’s cultural sentiments, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Sunday.
Speaking at the Global Leadership Forum held by the Art of Living here, the minister underlined how culture brings people together.
“Culture keeps people going. It also causes conflict. So the challenge is how to retain culture and at the same time make sure that we live in harmony, without harming each other’s cultural sentiments.”
He added: “We all belong to the same source, and have a right to live with different identities.”
The minister referred to the dialogue the Parsi community had with king of Gujarat when they migrated from Persia to India.
The Parsis, he said, not only survived “but are one of the most respected communities in India”.
He added that the fist human must be a women and contrasting nature and culture with diversity. (IANS)
